[comp.sys.atari.st] An interesting disk break/fix.

wheels@mks.UUCP (02/16/87)

When I picked up my SF354 disk drive to move it, something went
KLUNK inside. I didn't figure I should use it without checking.
Here is what I found...

There was a brass piece, cylindrical, about 1/4 inch tall and
somewhat larger in diameter, with a hole still holding the screw
that used to attach it, and another dimple which had been milled
out. As you can imagine, this would KLUNK nicely.

The apparent mounting point (the only one I could see with a missing
screw) was the top end of the stepping motor shaft! It appears that
this is simply dead weight, perhaps intended to alter the mass of the
stepping motor to make it step properly. It certainly sounds different
now. I think this has been loose since I got the machine.

I have heard people discuss the old noisy drives vs. the new quiet
drives -- could this be the only difference?
