You might be able to get some help from Paul Swanson, owner of Nite Lite Systems of Atari BBS software fame. (Has BBS's for both 8 and 16 bitters.) Paul has been developing some interesting software to use the MIDI port, and knows it like the back of his hand. Paul can be reached by BBS at (617) 663-4221. He also has a voice line but would prefer to be reached by BBS if possible as he is very busy. (He is an Atari sales and service dealer as well as developer of proprietary hardware and software.) You might find his MIDI Music Tutor program an interesting first software package to buy. It teaches the beginner to play a keyboard instrument, using the full power of the direct hand/ear/eye feedback made possible by having the keyboard tied to a computer via the MIDI port. The program should be just about ready to ship now, as Paul had a pre-release version running back in December. It looked pretty nifty, and I bet it will make learning to play a keyboard go MUCH faster than the old-fashioned method. -John Sangster jhs@mitre-bedford.arpa
