I want to thank everybody for the input (thru both email and postings) that I received on my questions re: the new newsgroup for the distribution of Atari ST sources and binaries. First let me cover a point that I omitted in my first posting: about 6 months ago I took a poll on the creation of this group. Along with an overwhelming 'yes' response came a message from a person stating that he was already in the process of setting up the group etc. so I backed off and waited. When no group was created and the traffic increased greatly on comp.sys.atari.st I decided to create the group. That is why the creation poll went out without a request for votes on creation. The general consensus on the naming of the groups was: comp.sources.atari.st For the following reasons (amoungst others): First, it seems inappropriate to have a moderated subgroup of an unmoderated group. Second, keeping sources subgroups together will be more effective in encouraging the desirable cross fertilization of ideas between machine types. Third, it will simplify the local news administrator's task if his installation has a general policy with regard to source files. and comp.binaries.atari.st This was a tough call since people seemed to be evenly split as to whether they want sources only; sources with binaries; or binaries-who-cares-about-sources-all-i-have-is-a-spitbol-compiler. Also some sites (backbones) have been making noises about not passing groups with binary posting. This would guarantee that atleast part of the group would survive. My policy will be to post sources and binaries whenever possible with the exception of those programs which are undergoing continueing development such as microEmacs or Uniterm. The idea of an 'ask-atari' group was met with luke warm acceptance at best and will not be created. I think that's about it, the group creation will happen late this week (2/27) or early next week to allow this message to propagate through the net first. Full instruction on how to submit sources, binaries, requests for sources etc. will be posted then. Hopefully gateways to other nets (bit*, fido*, arpa*) will be worked out in the near future. -- --------------- C'est la vie, C'est la guerre, C'est la pomme de terre Mail: Imagen Corp. 2650 San Tomas Expressway Santa Clara, CA 95052-8101 UUCP: ...{decvax,ucbvax}!decwrl!imagen!turner AT&T: (408) 986-9400
