[net.music] guitar stuff

sdh@rabbit.UUCP (S. Hawley) (01/15/84)

Could someone send me information on where I can mail order guitar parts
(necks, pickups, knobs, and bridges are of main interest) for reasonable
prices and hopefully out of New Jersey (want to avoid sales tax).

In Manhattan, on 48th street between Broadway and Avenue of the Americas
is virtually the musical instrument capital of the world. Try looking up in the
Manhattan Yellow Pages or in the white. Some of the more respectible stores
along this block that won't steer you too far wrong are: Manny's and Sam Ash.
In addition, there are several stores that specialize in used guitars and
guitar parts. Check them out. Sam Ash also has some New Jersey outlets
(bergen county I believe).
The other alternative available to you is to write to Fender (CBS
Musical Instruments), Guild, or Gibson for their catalogs. They sell guitar
parts retail, but list prices are expensive.
Take my advice m' lad and road trip to Fun City.

In addition to 48th st in Manhattan, any issue of "Guitar Player" Mag has
ads for several parts houses who do mail-order business. So do Sam Ash
& Manny's on 48th. There are lots of other stores on 48th st, too, many
with unique and interesting items.... such as the one right across from
the above two, a hugh storefront that sells & repairs used instruments,
including many vintage instruments.

Also in Manhattan, there's Matt Umanov's (sp?) in the Village, and
Eddie Bell's in the 20's does good repair work. One of the best
places in the world for vintage steel-string acoustics, banjos, mandolins,
dobros, etc., is Mandolin Brothers in Staten Island.

Finally, at any of these places you can have your purchase shipped out
of state, and thus avoid the sales tax; however, the shipping cost
will probably come to as much as the tax you save.
