[comp.sys.atari.st] Use the MIDI port for a network.

jack@mcvax.UUCP (02/26/87)

A couple of people (including me, of course) are currently
thinking of ways to use the MIDI ports to add some sort
of networking to the ST.

Our current ideas go in the direction of a little box, containing
a transformer, and maybe one or two chips for modulation/demod.
would that prove necessary, and connect the atari's using a
broadcast network.
More-or-less along the lines of AppleTalk (if I understand that
correctly from what I grasp from the net), or Ethernet (well, very
slightly so).

However, at this point we haven't actually done anything yet,
so I would be very interested in any ideas you have.
Product descriptions (if that's allowed, of course), ideas,
places to look for more information, everything is welcome.

Please reply to me, and I'll summarize to the net.
(Be assured, if we really develop something, it will be put
in the public domain)

Well, it just so happens that I've done a bit of work along these lines. I'm
posting to the net in case anyone else is interested. I've got some software
I wrote that allows two STs to be connected together through the MIDI ports
and will allow access to the remotes drives. For example, my ST is connected
to a friends (who lives next door ~150 feet of cable), and when he runs this
software, I can access his drives a-e as drives f-j. This is great because
I can access his hard drive, ramdisk, etc. without bringing a disk over there.

The effective transfer rate is about 30K baud. Could probably be improved a
bit with some re-coding in 68000. It would also be nice if I modified the
software so it would run in the background, thus freeing up both machines and
providing full access to each others filesystems. Anyway, it's a really neat
idea, and has a lot of potential. Anyone interested in more information (like
how to make the cables, and the software) can send me mail. If there's
enough interest, maybe I'll post to the net.
