[comp.sys.atari.st] Is this program PD ??

About a year ago, I was given some CP/M-formatted 5.25" disks containing
the source to ADVENTURES IN PASCAL (see below). I was told by the guy who
gave them to me during a computer faire that he had gotten the 40+ files from
some old DEC disks.
Well, some months ago I've adapted the game to the Atari ST using CCD/OSS
Pascal. I have play-tested it for a while and now I'd really like to share
the fun with all fellow Atarians on the net.
Being scared by all that legal talk about YACC and EMPIRE, I want to be
definitely sure that ADVENTURES (also known as COLOSSAL CAVE) is in the
public domain before sending it off to James Turner.
So, here are my questions:
- Who knows the original authors and where are they located now?
- How can I get in contact with them?
- Is this program really in the public domain?
If I don't get negative feedback, saying "No, don't do it!", within
2 to 3 weeks from now, I'm going to send a 3.5" disk containing the
executable program to James for distribution.

>> History -- This version of the "Adventures" game is written in OMSI
        PASCAL V1.2 running under RSX11M V3.2 BL26 on a PDP 11/23. It utilizes
special display text files for the VT-100 which makes use of double
width and double height characters for special effect.

Adapted from a FORTRAN-IV-PLUS version obtained from DEC in Santa CLara:

            ADVENTURES

            MODIFIED BY KENT BLACKETT
                    ENGINEERING SYSTEMS GROUP
                    DIGITAL EQUIPMENT CORP.
                    15-JUL-77

            ORIGINAL VERSION WAS FOR DECSYSTEM-10
THIS VERSION IS FOR FORTRAN IV-PLUS UNDER
THE IAS OPERATING SYSTEM ON THE PDP-11/70

The FORTRAN version also had a notice in the text files which was
listed in the instructions at the beginning of the game crediting the
        original authors as follows:

THIS PROGRAM WAS ORIGINALLY DEVELOPED BY WILLIE CROWTHER. MOST OF THE
FEATURES OF THE CURRENT PROGRAM WERE ADDED BY DON WOODS (DON @ SU-AI).
CONTACT DON IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS, COMMENTS ETC.

> Is this ADVENTURE (The original CRYSTAL CAVE) public domain?

As far as I know, it is. Yes, those are the original authors--
in many areas, this game is known as "Crowther and Woods Original Adventure".

Various versions floated around on DEC 20's for a while--when I was in
college a version floated by, and was modified extensively to include about
200 more rooms, and all sorts of puzzles. The source code to this game was
once published in one of the computer magazines as an April fools joke
(They printed it in incredibly tiny print so that the entire listing took
four pages!)
