[comp.sys.atari.st] Hippovision/ray tracing

[I can see for miles and miles and ....]

In response to the HippoVision query -- You can easily get 8 grey
levels with a color monitor. I could never figure out how to get 16.

I tried the HippoVision on a monochrome monitor initially, too. I also
got the same results which were described, namily, vertical bars
of what looked like hash. I spent about one hour fiddling with
all the controls (thresholds and such) with no useful effect. Turns
out that only two grey levels (on and off) are available when using
a monochrome monitor. Bottom line -- use two levels in black and white.

The auto set-up stuff really did seem to work. I'm a tweaker at heart
and could get a limited (subjective) improvement in image quality by playing
with the software controls.

BTW -- We ran some of my images through Tom Hudson's ray tracing program
(STart Spring 1987 issue) last night. Lot's of fun! It also makes you
appreciate Crays!
