I've seen at least one ad from a german firm, which sells a board with
a 68881 on it for the ST, I'll try to find it again and post the info to
net. One question remains: who would buy it right now? With 99% probability
it will be incompatible with the 'upcoming' blitter upgrade and as far as I
can remember it wasn't exactlly cheap. Atari: what about providing a version
of the blitter upgrade with the additional electronic 'glue' + empty socket
for a 68881?

[] >PS: the March/April issue of c't has instructions for a do-it-yourself > 2MByte upgrade in it! Is c't available in North America? Is it an English magazine? If not, it would be appreciated by more people than me, I'm sure, if someone could upload the instructions. Maybe in DEGAS format, if there are diagrams. I would second Simon's call for a 68881 socket on the blitter add-on.
Of course, that would not work if the blitter is just a chip and is
simply piggy-backed on the 68000. That was one of the rumored ways
the blitter attaches. And a great way to botch the blitter _and_ the ST,
if you goof the soldering job...
Atari: if you want to shoot yourself in the foot, sell the Mega-ST with
the 68000 soldered-in instead of in a socket. "Loose chips sink ships,"
but look at what the Amiga people are doing with their socketed CPU's!

PS: With the DMA port, the ST can send a 'dumb' laser printer the
complete 300dpi bitmap for the whole page in about 1 second.
