In the past few months I've seen many netters post words to the effect that they'd either just like a different mouse for their ST or their original ST mouse has worn out and they are looking for a replacement mouse that would have better longevity. For a while now, I've been using a Logitech P7 mouse with my ST. It is a much smoother mouse than the ST mouse (or just about any other mice I've tried) and the buttons have a nicer feel. I don't have the warranty information right here; I'm sure it is adequate. Logitech states that 'the mouse has been tested for 1000 miles of continuous use.' Now there's a few catches: One of the most important considerations is that the pinouts of the Logitech don't match the ST's, as well as having a male DB9 connector (the ST also uses a male DB9). This problem isn't too great as one could make a simple adapter from two female DB9s, a few lengths of wire, and a hood (appx. cost ~$5). The second catch, and probably more important, is that Logitech only sells their mice in stores bundled as the 'Logitech Bus Mouse', meaning it comes with a plug-in card for an IBM, and with the software drivers. This isn't of any use to us ST users. Also, the one from the store is a P7-3F, which has three buttons, and we want the P7-2F, which is only sold in stores under the AT&T trademark. So, after talking with Logitech representatives at the West Coast Computer Faire, and making a few phone calls and appointments, Logitech will sell the P7-2Fs to our user groups for ~$70 plus tax. This is about $30 more than the list for the Atari mouse; I guess quality doesn`t come cheap. Anyhow, we need an order of a minimum of 20 or so to get this price. If we can get enough people to partake in this purchase, Logitech is also considering marketing a replacement mouse of this type specifically for the Atari and Amiga (with the proper connectors attached already). I'm not affiliated with Logitech, and I'm not making any money whatsoever from this purchase. I just want to get myself another one for a reasonable cost. If you're kind of interested in getting one of these mice, send me a vote at this address: {...}!sun!oliveb!olivej!ses or via some other method I list in my .sig. If there is enough response from the net, my user's group, and a couple of the other user's groups around here, we can go ahead with the purchase. If you'd like to check out the mouse, head on over to your local IBM dealer and see if they carry it (in Silicon Valley I know they carry them at Fry's). So, I hope to hear from you!
