(26 lines) We currently use a 7261 NEC chip as a ST506 controller. Problem is that it can handle only up to eight heads per spindle. We would like to go to higher capacity drives than the 50 MByte Hitachi/Atasi we now use. The possibilities are: 1) go to higher density drives, like maxtores or acropolis, or 2) somehow increase the number of heads that we can use. Questions are: 1) does anybody know about the higher density drives mentioned above? any feedback would be appreciated since we don't want to be "first kids on the block" with these drives. 2) has anybody hacked a 7261 to handle more than eight heads per spindle? we've thought of using the REDUCE WRITE signal to split the heads into two "banks", but that seems ugly and would disallow REDUCE WRITE.
