What I would really like to see, would be a new enhanced control panel. These are some of the things I believe it should have: 1. Monochrome Reverse Screen. Rather than having to move all three color bars, just press a button. 2. Write Verify on/off selector. 3. Reset Button...have a selector for Warm/Cold start. 4. Corner clock. Simmilar to ALARM CLOCK.ACC which works ANYWHERE and DOES update every second. 5. Smaller size. (It IS kind of large for what it does.) 6. Remove the INSTALL PRINTER from the desk accessory slot. Instead take the INSTALL RS-232 and PRINTER and merge them, and have them be called from buttons on the control panel. (Install Ports) 7. Background style. (Is this possible?) 8. Icon editor/loader built in? (This is obviously a more unrealistic idea..but what the heck...) 9. Automatic setting of both SYSTEM and KEYBOARD clock when time is changed. 10.Better time management. 11.Have it display RAM FREE somewhere. These are ideas that could be implemented NOW, and no need to wait for additional hardware, or would not take that long a time to impliment for those who have the source code. Rick Flashman 1040 N. Why are all these Amiga owners here ready to jump in at any moment notice? I don't go over to their notes area and bother them, I'd rather they did not come here. I don't care, and it clutters my mail.

I save accessory slots for the things I use often. If you use these things all the time, so be it, but I'd suspect most peole would prefer to use AUTO folder programs (many exist to set the things you want in the control panel) to set up the configuration they use the most and run programs when they need to change things. >4. Corner clock. Simmilar to ALARM CLOCK.ACC which works ANYWHERE and > DOES update every second. This already exists as a program I wrote called JCLOCK. I'm working on an update and when it's finished, I'll send it to Turner. It has the advantage of being a TSR (terminate stay resident) instead of a accessory so it doesn't take up desk slots. It also runs in any and all prgs (it doesn't rely on GEM psudo-multitasking) and it can be switched on or off at any time with a special keystroke... >9. Automatic setting of both SYSTEM and KEYBOARD clock when time is > changed. I've considered putting this in as a side effect of JCLOCK (would be pretty simple to do) but I wasn't sure if there were any programs which rely on the ability to change one while leaving the other alone. If anyone has an opinion on this last item, please feel free to comment.... --- John Stanley (john@viper.UUCP) Software Consultant - DynaSoft Systems UUCP: ...{amdahl,ihnp4,rutgers}!{meccts,dayton}!viper!john

What I want is a standalone (non-accessory) program which does all the things the 2 standard desk accessories do. Well, I suppose I could live without the VT52 emulation, but something with features of the sum of the control panel, install printer, and configure RS232 bits. Reason is that between my desktop.inf and the few things in my auto folder, all these adjustable thingies get set up the way I (almost invariably) want them -- and it annoys me that I can't get at them to adjust them on the few occasions when they want changed unless I've given up 4 accessory slots and probably 50K of memory (better used as a print spool) to the accessories which do these things. Spose I oughta write one :-) While I'm at that, the other thing on my wish list is a 'little bit different' command shell. There are a number of almost right ones about, but the one thing they won't do is let me get at the 'read-only/read-write' bit of file entries. (Yeah, I'm one of these perverts who likes the marginal insurance of having read-only set wherever possible.) It ought to be in the shell because it's cheap and because I don't want to have to switch to a utilities flopsy everytime I need the function. And it's incredibly boring to have to set the switch 1 file at a time from the GEM desktop, rather than with a 'protect *.*' from the desktop -- or, cal it chmod if you're feeling Unixy, but of course then it needs another parameter to tell it which way, so I'd go for protect/unprotect.

I have tried the GULAM command shell developed at Case. I think it is the best around. If it does not have the feature you are looking for, you might write to "bammi@case.uucp" and ask for it. -- L.
