[comp.sys.atari.st] Disk status Utilities

goertzel@DCA-EMS.ARPA (Herbert Goertzel) (05/17/87)

I have been looking for the ST version of 2 utilities I have gotten used
to on my IBM clone at the office. The first is the disk utilization map
in Norton Utilities so I can get some idea of how fragmented my Hard Disk
has become over time and the other is a Shareware program called SST which
defragments the disk making all files continuous and significantly cutting
down on read time. Are there ST routines that provide this functionalty,
either PD or commercial? If you know of any, please let me know.

First the good news, I've written a utiltiy which has following functions:

-disk check (hard disks + floppys) with limited automatic repair
        (a la MS-DOS chkdisk)
       -unerase
-sector and file orientated disk editor with search facility
       -disk fragmentation display
       -GEM based user interface
       (and a few things more...)

The bad news:

-its just slowly moving out of beta-test status (but it seems to be
        quite near release now)
       -documentation is not finished yet
-I haven't decided on what to do with it:

-Freeware (I've already got one product with this
and considering the amount of support it gets
(find a commercial product that is as well
                             supported and I'll buy you a beer :-)) I don't
get that much back from it (execpt the fame :-)),
notice that I don't have a CS in my signature,
with other words: I don't get paid for hacking
                            around on computers.....

-Shareware, would be probably the fairest method but
automatically stops distribution and support via
                           e-mail.

-Commercial: probably not worth the trouble.....

If anybody wants to have a look at the beta-test version (with the
usual disclaimers), I could probably handle a few more beta-testers.....

I am currently beta testing a program that will do what you asked. It is
written by the same author (Dave Clemans) that wrote Backup! from Michtron.
It will show you graphically what blocks are used on any drive for the whole
drive or each file. It will check for unused but marked as used blocks and
try to recover them. It will list the status of files on the drive and tell
you things like if they are fragmented or not. And will de-fragment a drive
of any size. It's a very nice tool (especially if you run an ST BBS like me.)

I do not know the release date or if it will be distributed through Michtron
or not. I know that Dave is on the Net and could respond with further
information when possible.
