I hope I am not the manual link from citadel into usenet :-) -Todd Burkey ...ihnp4!meccts!zeke!stag!trb From dal Wed May 20 22:32:14 1987 remote from syntel Date: Wed, 20 May 87 14:55:38 CDT From: dal@syntel.UUCP (Dale Schumacher) To: stag!trb Subject: Citadel/UUCP gateway Message-Id: <0520871455380008@syntel.UUCP> Todd, Would you please post this in the appropriate news group. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- It seems that a little explaination about my project is needed... I'm working on creating a UUCP gateway for a BBS program called "Citadel". This BBS software is public domain, yet quite featureful and works reliably. It is available for CP/M machines (the original version), MS-DOS (a greatly enhanced program), and has recently been ported to the Atari ST and Amiga, from the MS-DOS version. The orginiator of the ST version of Citadel (STadel) can be reached at the following net address: ..ihnp4!meccts!zeke!stag!pell!orc That address will become the first test site for the gateway when it is completed. Currenty, only the UUCP side of the gateway is working for the ST. It's only a test program and will not be released publically. The full Citadel/UUCP gateway will be public domain, along with the rest of the Citadel package. It will also be ported to work with the MS-DOS version of Citadel. The gateway will work is as follows... The Citadel BBS will exit to a batch process which will execute the CITUMAIL mail server program. Citadel already supports a network of it's own, so the UUCP gateway will simply be a virtual Citadel net node called "UUCP". Citadel will never try to call this node, but will create the normal networking control file. The mail server will use this control file to extract outgoing mail messages from the Citadel message base, add UUCP headers to them, and create the control file that UUCP expects to see. The mail server, as a master, will call a normal UUCP node and deliver the mail. It then allows role-reversal and accepts incomming mail. The server reformats the mail message according to Citadel conventions and uses the control file to deliver the mail by intergrating it into the Citadel message base. Citadel messages are currently limited to 7500 characters, so messages must be kept small. Later upgrades will support dumping large messages into an external file and sending an appropriate message to the intended recipient, but for now long messages will be truncated. One last note... Since many of the Citadel systems will not initially be registered nodes, use of explicit bang-paths is strongly encouraged. When the gateway has been tested and appears to work properly, a version of STadel which includes this feature will be distributed through as many channels as possible. You may also want to call Pell (STadel) directly at (612) 377-9239, 300/1200 baud, 24hrs (except when orc is programming). ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Dale Schumacher ..ihnp4!meccts!zeke!stag!syntel!dal
