Hello! I've just recently purchased a 1040ST and I like it very much. And being curious, I want to know more about the machine. I've purchased the Abacus book (#2) to help me understand the internals, and I've started to pour through it, but the way that all the special chips inside are connected confuses me. I was wondering if any of you out there would care to enlighten me about ST internals with a short tutorial (e-mail). Another thing that bothers me is that GEM features are not fully explained in the manuals that came with my ST. I just barely know that what-ever programs you want to run at startup must be in an AUTO folder on the boot disk (right?). Also, the distinctions between .TOS, .TTP and .PRG files elludes me--are there physical differences in the structures of these program files? (I realize that there must be differences in the way these programs interface with TOS and GEM; I wouldn't mind knowing more about that). In addition, what's the scoop about .ACC programs and resource files (resource files were never mentioned in the stuff that came with my ST); how does their structure differ from regular programs? Well, I know this is alot--but I promise that if I get enough response, I will summarize and post it here (I appologize if this stuff is really old hat for everyone. I haven't been following this newsgroup for too long). ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Oh, one gratuitous rumour: I overheard a couple of Atari dealers talking about the Megas and how Atari wasn't going to start shipping them until they cleared out their warehouses full of 520's. Thanks for your help (in advance). Ron -- Ron Pfeifle | University of Waterloo | {decvax,allegra,ihnp4} | !watmath!watvlsi!rpfeifle |
