[comp.sys.atari.st] Atari and dealerships

pjd@cwruecmp.UUCP (dr. funk) (07/20/87)

Thanks for the word on the L&Y memory upgrades. Are there any
other good or bad reviews out there? I may need to go to at least
2 Mb pretty soon.......

When I was in Virginia last Thanksgiving I stopped at L&Y. I left
with good vibes about L&Y. I wish that Northeastern Ohio had an
Atari software dealer of such quality and depth. Title selection
was great -- especially in the area of systems software (compilers,
etc.) Too many local stores stock games only, which makes intelligent
sampling impossible.

What does this mean for Atari? (Neil? Neil?) 1. The ST gets perceived
as yet another Atari game machine. 2. Serious hacks who want to
contribute to the PD base are left wanting or discouraged due to the
poor dealer support of development products.

Luckily, we have had some resources ($$$) at work with which to
"sample" development software by buying one or two copies of a product
for evaluation. (Ever wonder why Bammi STILL hasn't graduated? :-)
Unfortunately, those resources are now gone. This puts us in a bind
as we run an ethical shop and discourage piracy.

It's good to hear that Atari wants to put its dealer ducks in line.
Please don't blow it now guys. This machine is two years mature
with a good line of available software. It's time to evaluate,
formulate and execute a strategy to increase market share and I
suspect that the dealer network is a critical part of that strategy.
