I am in the process of implementing sendmail on System V and although I have some way to go a secondary problem has become apparent: None of our user-interface mail programs know about RFC822. When I say none I really mean mailx(1) [a revamped version of Berkley's Mail(1) for System V]. The main problem is understanding From:, To:, Cc: and Reply-To: header lines when [Rr]eply-ing to a mail item. Both mailx and Mail (in different ways) attempt to "deal" with network names and tend to get hopelessly confused with the variety now available. What they should really do is just extract a list of RFC822 "mailbox" items and pass these to sendmail. But what about constructing new headers? For example, when replying to "From: Alan Young <awy@iclbra.uucp>" mailx tries to mail to "Alan", "Young" and "<awy@iclbra.uucp>". Infact things are more complicated than that. Any way what I really want to know is: 1. What mail user-interface programs are available (SysV)? 2. Are patches to mailx (or Mail) that cope with RFC822 available? 3. Has anyone else tried implementing sendmail on System V? Please mail responses to me and I'll post a summary if there is material of interest. -------- Alan Young.
