I am doing development which involves a thinly disguised X, and would love to be able to test at home. Would consider helping with a port, but don't really have the time to spear- head the effort... _john -- John T. The give a short review of OS-9 and when ask about X-Windows, here is what Microware said: "Right now, it is a debatable issue. They feel that although X-Windows is fine for larger, more powerful computers, it's just too slow and bulky for smaller, 68000 based systems without special hardware to handle it. That doesn't mean that they won't port it, but they would like to consider any alternatives first." The editor went on to mention that a program called IDRIS is coming out with a UNIX (r) like operating system and that they would support X-Windows. They mentioned that it was from Software Toolworks. I don't know anything further. Hope this adds a little useful information. Kit Kimes AT&T--Information Systems Labs ...ihnp4!iwvae!kimes

The idris people (unix look-alike) have an X windows port in progress.

I don't know about Software Toolworks association with it, but I'm pretty sure that it is available from some folks called Computer Tools International in Washington State. CTI did the port of Idris to the ST. The Idris operating system for the 68K and other machines comes from Whitesmiths, Ltd. in Westford, MA. Farrell T. Woods Datacube Inc. Posting-Front-End: GNU Emacs 18.47.4 of Tue Aug 4 1987 on candi (berkeley-unix) Greg Onufer and I started to port X to the Atari. I can't speak for Greg, but I haven't got to far. I had some troubles with my Atari and got mad it and left it turned off for a month. Next, it was summer, and I began to sail almost every day. Now the Mega ST, MINIX, and X version 11 are all near their release date. X requires multi-tasking. I had been toying with the idea of creating my own mini-kernel, but with MINIX almost here I am very tempted to wait for it. Also it has been announced that X version 11 will be available in two weeks. I would prefer to port X V11 rather than the now obsolete V10. Finally, I was hoping that purchasing a new Mega ST would decrease development time (bigger ram disk). That's the news from here. I'll let Greg speak for himself. -- ---Bob Amstadt bob@wiley.uucp {csvax.caltech.edu,trwrb.uucp}!wiley!bob
