Is it possible to hook up a Sony Multiscan or NEC Multisync on an Atari ST? Does one simply need to rig a cable or buy some type of 'box'? Sure saves money when you can use your PC monitor with other computers..

I have seen a description for hooking up the Multiscan to the ST in Computer Shopper. This was several months ago, and I probably don't have the issue anymore. Basically, it involved a few series resistors for the R, G, and B lines, and tying the monochrome detect line high (or was that low?). Farrell T. Woods Datacube Inc. Yes, it is very possible to use multi-scan monitors on the ST. In fact, if the monitor has sufficient bandwidth you can also use it to display high-res, and thus get all three ST display resolutions on a single monitors. To be specific, for about the past five months I've been using a Sony CPD-1302 Multi-scan monitor on my ST. The monitor handles all three resolutions fine (what few problems I have are caused by my home-built cable; it's impedance is a little off). The thing to watch for when interfacing foreign RGB monitors to the ST is the signal level that the monitors expect. The ST generates a one volt peak to peak signal, a typical monitor wants 0.6 volts p-p. What I did was to stick some resistors in series with each of the video lines to drop the voltage to what the monitor wants. For people wanting to try anything with the ST's high-res monochrome output: The ST is switched into high-res mode by grounding the monochrome detect line on the video connector. The actual monochrome output is on a seperate line. It looks like a "rgb" output (1 volt peak to peak, etc.). You can control the "color" of high res mode by which of the monitor's RGB inputs it's hooked up to; I just went ahead and connected it to all three to get a black and white display when in high-res mode. dgc

While on this subject, has anyone actually TRIED hooking up the mono monitor and running it off the RGB outputs and sync? I am very tempted to try this. Yes, I know, "May damage your monitor!", "Can't possibly work - the scan frequency is wrong!", etc., etc. But has any foolish soul ACTUALLY TRIED IT? It does seem to me that there is a faint glimmer of possibility that it would work. -- Doug Collinge School of Music, University of Victoria, PO Box 1700, Victoria, B.C., Canada, V8W 2Y2 collinge@uvunix.BITNET decvax!uw-beaver!uvicctr!collinge ubc-vision!uvicctr!collinge
