HELP! I just bought PC-Ditto and have yet to figure out how to make an IBM boot disk. Here's what I have done so far: Had a friend with a NEC AT Compatible format his 3.5 inch drive using three different systems (NEC DOS Ver 3.2, PC-DOS Ver 3.2, and Zenith MS-DOS Ver 3.2). (Each one separately, of course). Each time, the disk checked out at 7XX K free. When I try to boot from any of those disks though, I get a boot error. Also, the IBM 3.5 inch disk files show up in the GEM directory but when you try to copy or open (like AUTOEXEC.BAT) any of the files I get a "check disk" report from GEM. PC-Ditto appears to be working properly -- ie, I get no indication that there is a problem until it says to stick the IBM disk in drive A, at which time I get the boot error. I was under the impression that the ST could read the IBM 3.5 inch disks without any problem. If it can, I sure wish somebody would tell me how. Any help anyone can provide will be _deeply_ appreciated. Dennis Scott PS: The format command was FORMAT B:/S ie, the System WAS transferred. I'm using a 1040 Color System with the one internal drive.

Here's what I have done so far: ...futile attempts deleted..... here's what i did and it's pretty ugly. There is a program for the (dare I say it ???) amiga called 'transformer' which is the same as PC-ditto. I have a friend who has an amiga with a 5 1/4" disk attached, so we just stuck an MSDOS floppy into the 5 1/4" disk and copied it to the 3 1/2" disk using the transformer. Now what good does this do you ??? well you can attach a 5 1/4" disk to your atari (it takes 1 buffer chip and some cable) and ....... Before you ask, the copy program is an ST utility that can be run under GEM. Look under the STPROGRAMS folder. -- C'est la vie, C'est la guerre, C'est la pomme de terre {cbosgd,fortune,hplabs,seismo!ihnp4,ucbvax}!nsc!daisy!turner Jim Turner Daisy Systems, 700 E. After I posted the message on Info-Atari, I tried PC-Ditto again.
But this time when it asked me to insert the DOS disk, I kept
hitting the return key when it gave me the boot error. Finally,
it booted. The first thing I did was format a couple more disks
with a system on them, copied the applicable files over, and then
created a config.sys with the proper driver.sys call in it. It
would not even boot from those disks either. The only disk it
will boot from is the one formatted on the IBM compatible and
then only once in a while. I'm wondering if I may have a disk
drive problem -- but then again, I have no problem at all reading
regular ST disks. And when I run a seek test program on the
drive, it checks out fine.
One thing not mentioned in the reply -- Can anyone else
read/copy/manipulated files on an IBM formatted disk from GEMDOS?
I can not!
Also, (Jim) if anyone has the schematic for connecting a regular
IBM style 5 1/4 disk to the ST, PLEASE! post it.
Again, thanks for the help!

directories are often messed up (directories from a disk recently in the drive gets mixed in with the current directory, files disappear, etc.). I usually have to fool around quite a bit to get the directory back to normal (hit the escape key several times, close and open the window, eject the disk, etc.). I've not had this problem with disks formatted with DOS 3.2 on my ST (oh, BTW, the disks formatted with 3.3 were formatted on a new System/2 model 30 my University has). The article had 1 serious omission, the ST uses cmos level signals while most disk drives use TTL level. The result is that the signals are too weak (from ST) to reach the disk drive. The solution was to grap an off-the-shelf buffer chip, run power to it from the A drive, and buffer all of the signals from the ST to the drive. I don't believe that we did anything to the signals going from the drive to the ST (actually the A drive, but why get pickey). If you can't find the article send me email and i will see if i can dig it up. -- C'est la vie, C'est la guerre, C'est la pomme de terre {cbosgd,fortune,hplabs,seismo!ihnp4,ucbvax}!nsc!daisy!turner Jim Turner Daisy Systems, 700 E. i tried posting this before but i think that the posting program ate it...
the chip is a 74S244N buffer chip, unfortunately it would involve too
much disassemble of my floppy drive to trace all the wires and give
you the pin outs. but basically you need to buffer all of the signals
from the ST to the disk drive OR use a cmos level disk drive (as compared
to TTL level)
