Well now Konica has come to our rescue, they have a 10M 5.25 SCSI floppy drive. They use standard 5.25 floppies, but they have written some sync bytes to it. We will sell the floppy for 19.95, Konica is getting the major floppy manufacture to sell the floppy, so there will not be a problem there. There are manufactures who are going to sell the unit to the Mac and IBM market, so we should be able to see some price dropping over time. At introduction, the unit is very competivly priced with tape units. We will sell 2 versions, a SCSI version and a DMA version. The DMA version will go for 899, the SCSI is a little cheaper. The drive is very fast, it has the speed performance of a 10M 4:1 HD. The floppy drive can also read, but not write, MS-DOS 360K and 1.2M floppies. We will start receiving production units mid-October. This is my second-and-a-half review, sort of. (Just wait, it gets better!) Really, this is a collection of news items and rumors that I've uncovered, pursued, or just plain made up (just kidding). First, I saw a working version of Word Perfect 4.1 for the ST. It was on a color monitor; I didn't have a chance to see it run in mono. All I've got to say about it is, after having used it on an IBM PC AT, I think the ST version is S..L..O..W.....! Also, the GEM interface seems more like it was added to facilitate their own interface. I realize that this is so users familiar with it can use it right off, and so that a use can avoid having to use the mouse at all, but it really slows down the program. Plus, they chose to use some rather unusual colors; to reflect a time-consuming operation (I'm assuming that's what it was: the disk started going and never stopped until the salesman turned off the computer), they just changed the screen colors. Aside from that, I guess, if you're a real die-hard WP fan, you'll probably like it. If not, Word Writer ST, from what I hear, and what I've seen, would be a better buy. Oh yeah, WP comes with 7 disks. Blitter! ROMs! According to the salesman at this same store, the blitter upgrade will be a motherboard swap for 520 owners. It may be a routine chip attachment for 1040s, but 520s HAVE to have the motherboard exchanged. Who knows? Maybe this is true. Also, according to one guy, it's supposed to be in January; the other one said February. In a magazine I picked up, called ST X-Press, they printed a copy of Atari's manual for programming the blitter. According to this, the blitter is capable of the following: Area seed fill Rotation using recursive division (huh?) Slice and smear magnification Text effects (outlining, bold, etc.) Text scrolling Window updating (no, really?) I can only swear that this was what I read. I have no idea if it's true. I finally have pc-Ditto running, and it's really nice to see things like Word Perfect 4.2 running. It is just amazing what you can do with an ST, slowing it down to 4.7 Mhz PC speed. But, really, I am having fun with it, and will report more on it when I have more to report. I saw two more CAD packages in the stores: FirstCAD from Generic Software, and Athena II, from I don't remember. Both are supposed to be two dimensional CAD programs, and Athena II is supposed to support colors and all. FirstCAD, though, is, well, pretty generic in its packaging. I don't know any more about these yet, but as I've a friend who may be getting one soon, I should have something to report in the near future. \ / Disclaimer: I'm not associated \ /\ /arner with the latest revision \/ \__/ of SANITY. |oung \___| Last known address: dorothy.Berkeley.EDU!c9c-eh (I think) ------------------------------ Date: 17 Oct 87 21:31:09 GMT From: ihnp4!alberta!mnetor!utzoo!utgpu!water!ljdickey@ucbvax.Berkeley.EDU Subject: Re: Publishing Partner / WordUp / BIGformat To: info-atari16@score.stanford.edu In article <764@sbcs.sunysb.edu> lean@sbcs (Lean L. I use my 1040ST as a terminal and love it. The best software is FREE. The emulator Uniterm is great. It emulates the Tek 4010 and VT52, VT100, VT102, and VT200. The folks in the Computer Engineering Department at Case Western Reserve University use them too, many with hard disks connected. They have developed a splendid shell, called Gulam, which behaves something like the CSH on BSD4.X. It has a terminal emulator built in. Also, someone there has done an APL terminal emulator. -- L. Did you actually bother to READ the upgrade letter sent out by OSS? They specifically stated that you would be charged early, and receive the software later. They also promised that if they did not get it out on the projected date, they would either (1) pay for the shipping or (2) let you have a coupon for a "free" next upgrade. They mailed out a card on the 14th of August to that effect (and yes, I am keeping the card handy...) Manuals -- well it looks like a LOT of printers are having major problems getting computer manuals (and magazines - ala ST-Log) out on time. Most large print shops have schedules -- if they print during week one, they may not be able to reschedule a printing for four weeks or so. I'm currently using the function... wind_set(0, WF_NEWDESK, desktop_tree, 0, 0); Where WF_NEWDESK = 14, desktop_tree = pointer to an object tree. When I try to use this function, the program bombs (usually when the desktop redraws itself). The object tree is fine. I can draw it in a window using objc_draw() with no problem. I've also tried splitting the address into two integers (lo word, hi word) and supplied them at the third and fourth arguments (as documented by Abacus). This didn't work either. Can anyone HELP?? I am using OSK as the operating system for this project. I lost the article in which someone (Ashwin, Moshe, or Jawar?) stated how they implemented writing to the cartridge port. I would like to follow that implementation and support it as a "de facto" standard, i.e., clock to pin x, AS to pin y, etc. I am making a modification to the implementation - I believe that he was writing to $3FFFFF. I am going to make the I/O port both read and write at $4FFFFF or above. I want to do this to avoid a potential conflict between the port and future memory expansion up to 4 megs. Any thoughts on this? I would appreciate if the person in question could email the info contained in that article to: iseic.ea@simtel20.arpa I need the info as quickly as possible in order to complete this portion of the project this weekend (24-25 OCT) -- the end of the semester draws near!
