A couple of weeks ago people were complaining about the TeX implementation from Tools (Tools GmbH, Kessenicher Str. 108, D-5300 Bonn 1, Germany, tel.: germany-228-230088). The old version indeed had a serious drawback: all files had to be stored in one directory. They now offer a new version (2.1) were all problems are eliminated. Here are some of the new features: - Search paths for input files, output files, font files, ... (even allowing multiple directories to be scanned). - Environment variables or a file ENVIRONM.ENT for describing the configuration. - Libraries for fonts and tfm files (saves a lot of time and space) can be (but need not be) used. A program for packing and unpacking libraries is supplied, the file structure is documented. - Printer drivers for FX80 (and compatibles), Star SR-10, NR-15, SG-15, NEC P6, Epson LQ-2500, SQ-2500, NEC P2, OKI Microline 293, HP LaserJet and a previewer are available. PK Fonts are used (packed format, saves space). Screen Resolution can be selected. Fonts are substituted if font files are missing. - TeX is now faster (nearly as fast as TeX on an empty VAX (which is a rather slow implementation)). Registered users can now order an upgrade (I paid about DM 150,00 for a complete upgrade (LaTeX, Initex, ...)). I have no connections with Tools except that I am a satisfied customer.
