Anyone else out there have the new ROMs yet? I just got mine yesterday, but I havent tried them yet because my power supply quit just after I installed them. This leads me to make two comments: The power supply: A conservative hand operated the wave soldering machine the day they made my power supply. After repeated heating and cooling due to normal use of my machine, some of the solder joints underneath the small power transformer developed hairline cracks. This was not hard to fix, just hard to find. I was *really* alarmed when my ST didn't even power up after installing the new ROMs :-O The new ROMs are dated 4/87. They are all uniqely labelled, i.e., "H0, H1, H2 and L0, L1, L2". This labelling is pretty obvious, except for the fact that it does NOT match the labelling on the current ROMs. Am I missing something here? I will have to guess at the ordering of the ROMs on the motherboard; there are four combinations that seem to make sense to me. If there's interest, I will post where the new ROMs should go as soon as I figure it out (if I haven't busted any pins, either ;-) Farrell T. Woods Datacube Inc. Well, I can't comment on my new ROMs. TOS won't boot! :-O My copy of Idris which lives on the other half of the disk seems to boot and run just fine, although it doesn't use much of TOS once its booted. The placment for the ROMs seems to be as I originally guessed from spelunking the schematic: H2 H1 H0 L2 L1 L0 Sigh! Farrell T. Woods Datacube Inc. Systems / Software Group 4 Dearborn Rd. There are a few copy-protected games that won't work, but other than that all the changes seem to be for the better. GEM moves a lot more quickly, even without a blitter chip. Speaking of blitter chips, I heard that Atari finally announced that no upgrade kits for 520s and 1040s will be made. Anyone want to verify/deny that? I suspected from the first that they wouldn't do it (it's typical for Atari...) +New! Improved! There has been quite a bit of discussion of the new ROMs, but I need answers to 2 fundamental questions: 1. Where can you get the new ROMs ? 2. How do you install them ? Thanks. Jonathan Nagy {ihnp4|allegra|harvard}!homxc!jdn (201) 615-4349

Where to get the new ROMs: If you are a registered developer...they are available from Atari. How to install them: On the 1040, which is what I have, you have to remove the top of the case and power supply (which covers the area on the motherboard where the ROMs live). E-mail me for details on either or both of these issues. If I receive a large number of requests, I can post to the net. Farrell T. Woods Datacube Inc. Systems / Software Group 4 Dearborn Rd.
