[comp.sys.atari.st] Need advice: C compilers and peripherals

jfp@mck-csc.UUCP (John Pries) (12/15/87)

I'm helping my younger brother out with a C compiler for a Xmas present ...

Unfortunately, I know little about the world of 520 STs. Could anyone
out there please give any advice on the available C compilers. I have
seen Lattice available at one of the local stores (published by METACOMO),
it's a familiar name from PC land, but who are there METACOMO folks?
Does this one work, are others better (for a student programmer at college,
interested in programming and capable for a freshman).

Another issue is that his current machine has but a single floppy. Is it
even practical of compile/link with a single floppy drive? I've done it
on PCs but ....

What about the world of hard drives? The local establishment had an Atari
20 meg model available for $670 .... this seems like too much for a
"consumer grade" 20 meg hard disk these days ... Is this an acceptable
drive (reliability, speed, etc. ) or are other choices available ....

While we're at it, any good game selections .......

Thanx for any help .......
Please reply by e-mail to ..!mit-eddie!mck-csc!jfp

                                           regards,

I don't know if I would recommend Lattice C. I liked it on the IBM,
but once I bought it for my ST , I ran into bug after bug. It was
barely useable for classwork, I was able to code around all the bugs
in the small few hundred line school programs, but for hacking there
are TONS of bugs in the gem interface, it is too strict on typing (I
might as well use pascal).

For the record, I have version 3.1. There is a newer version out
which includes a resource editor. I am waiting for Laser C from
Megamax.

I was told this evening by a person who talked to Megamax via phone today.
The long awaited upgrade to Megamax is now available. To obtain, one must
send in their original disks. the people who purchased the package prior to
July of this year MUST send in $20.00US for the upgrade, while people who
bought it in July or after will be able to obtain for free. I will await
further information from Megamax directly. Maybe I will call their BBS
tonight,.
