In the most recent issue of Unix/World (January) in the product of the month section, Atari announced their new IDRIS Mega ST. It is a Mega St with 2meg of memory and 20meg hard disk. IDRIS is a UNIX lookalike. The article also mentioned Atari's plans to introduce a 68030 machine running System V UNIX some time next year. And now in case any body is wondering why Im posting this, I wanted to wrap this as sweetly as possible. Yes, Im the jerk that made that nasty posting a few days ago about Ataris. I wanted to make a few points very clear, reaching as many readers of this group as possible. The same applies for the "other group". For years now I have read usenet news. I have watched passively as some of the massive flame wars have gone by. I have learned a while back, why. Part of the problem lies in the news software and system itself. There is a widely held misconception in that posting news to a cross posting results in your message appearing only in your news group. Unfortunately this is not so. And postnews doesn't warn you. The other problem is that when a war is in progress, people that normally only read news, get upset and start posting to these flames going back and forth. (Im now talking about inexperienced users that normally never post at all, except perhaps an occasional question) This increases the traffic in both groups, in addition to what is already being said in both groups. More traffic and hateful postings since it appears to readers of a this group that the "other group" is just posting nasty stuff in this group. (When in reality, the "other group" thinks the same thing). More hate. More unproductive junk, reaches a peak and dies, sort of. Except a lingering feeling that the "other group" is composed of vicious rabid dogs. Now on to cross postings. Great but, thanks to these lingering feelings the inevitable eventually reappears. Wars. Hate. Mudslinging. So, in view of this, and my past experience, I would recommend extreme caution in cross posting to the "other group" unless you possess superhuman unbiased opinions. Keep it generic. There is no reason it can't work out, other than those stated above. That's all I was trying to say. I know its a bit radical, but perhaps in some way, this will be the war to end all wars. Perhaps something productive. And on that note, I just want to say.... Merry Christmas, and a Joyous New Year!
