[net.music] Jo Callis .... Rezillos, Shake, etc.

pking@denelcor.UUCP (P. King) (01/27/84)

Jo Callis was indeed in The Rezillos. The Rezillos lineup
consisted of Eugene Reynolds, Fay Fife, Jo Callis, Simon
Templar, and ____. They put out several singles,
one studio album, and one live album of bootleg quality.

As a result of personality clashes, the Rezillos broke
up. Eugene Reynolds and Fay Fife formed a new band
called The Revillos, who have put out several singles,
an album, an e.p., and supposedly have a new album out.

Jo Callis and the other Rezillos formed a band called
Shake (or The Shake Project) and they put out a couple
of singles and an e.p., none of which were particularly
noteworthy except "Invasion of the Gamma-Men".

Later, Jo Callis formed Boots for Dancing. I don't
know how many records they put out.

Still later, Jo joined The Human League.

	My opinions.
I like The Rezillos album ("Can't Stand the Rezillos")
quite a bit. It is real fast rock and roll with a good
dose of humor. Jo Callis penned songs including: "Flying
Saucer Attack", "Destination Venus", and "2000 A.D.". They
also did a real socko version of "Glad All Over". If you
can find this album, buy it.

I like The Revillos early singles and album quite a lot also.
Very similar in style to the Rezillos ... very fast, rough,
rock and roll music. Some of their titles include: "Juke
Box Sound", "Motorbike Beat", "Scuba-Boy Bop", and "She's
Fallen in Love with a Monster Man". (Just to give you an
idea of their approach.) Most of their later singles seemed
to lack the punch of their earlier matierial. Their (first)
album, "Rev Up", also gets the P.King stamp of approval.

The first time I realized that Jo Callis was in The Human
League was when I saw "The League Unlimited Orchestra" down
at Wax Trax (the local "modern" and oldies record store).
I immediately bought it. I find it enjoyable, but not a
real knock-out. I am not sure that The Human League is
a band where Callis will really be able to spread out (the
same problem faced by the original guitar player for The
	Turtles). Only time will tell.

(appologies for forgotten names, I do not have access to
any reference matierial other than my memory.)
