[ this is forwarded from a friend ] Recently I received two issues of the German magazine c't. It has all kinds of interesting articles, so I'd like to share a short summary of them with you. I don't read German, so this is my approximation of the contents. I would *love* it if someone who spoke German would post a summary each month... ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Summary of c't articles concerning Atari ST; February 1988 p. 32 "Atari Laserdrucker SLM804" -- Review of Atari laser printer. p. 40 "Echtzeitbetriebssystem PDOS fur Atari" -- Review of yet another multitasking-multiuser operating system for the ST: PDOS. Didn't really look at this much as I already have OS-9 ;-) p. 48 "Btx-Manager Fur Atari ST" -- Review of a graphics program for mono STs under TOS. p. 68 "Blitten mit und ohne Blitter" -- Demonstration program using the ST blitter. p. 84 "Atari ST und Harddisk an einem Netzschalter" -- Seems to be a circuit that delays turning on your computer until after the harddisk has had time to spin up. p. 106 "ST greift um sich" -- Programming article describing a driver program for a robot arm on an ST with a 68020 accelerator board running under RTOS-UH. p. 126 "Billigloesung - Preisgunstige PC-Harddisk am Atari" -- complete plans for adding an IBM PC-compatible slot (they have a hard disk plugged into theirs) hanging off the DMA port. The slot interface is about 1.5" by 4" and consists of 3 connectors, 2 capacitors and resistors, and... 5 simple 74LSxxx chips. It looks like you could buy the parts for it at Radio Shack and put it together in an evening. Of course, it will take a while to type in the harddisk driver and formatting software, which is provided, written in assembler and Lattice C. The article is 10 pages long. Page 14 talks about new products that Atari is releasing this year; the PC5 is an 80386 PC klone. Funny, haven't seen one of those on my local store shelves ;-) In previous issues they have had articles about a 68020/881 board that piggybacks onto the ST motherboard and runs RTOS at 12.5 mhz. Next issue they plan an article on running TOS on the '020 board... they have patched the ROMS and could run 98% of the 300 programs that they tested with it. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- I'm really excited about this stuff, and I would *love* to see someone making interface kits (hint hint). Also, a monthly column by someone talking about these articles would be welcomed. I have no connection with c't (and I didn't even pay for this copy ;-) Greg Lindahl | brandeis radio astronomy group (BRAG) | ci$: [76515,1122] --------------------------------------| us snail: box 2522 brandeis university DRI?
