[comp.sys.atari.st] Megamax: Fast Compiler, Slow Company

Yes, she is gracious. Lovely accent.

I have repeatedly had problems with Megamax shipping product. They put me
off for about 4 months back when they first brought out their ST compiler,
with various printer problems and the like. I finally got a compiler from
them on two disks with a scribbled-on Mac version of the manual after much
hassle and a large long-distance bill. More recently, I tried for over 6
months to buy the Mac version for a project at work. This time I went through
a store, thinking (perhaps naively) that this would give me a bit more
leverage. About two months in, it became clear they were not really going
to have one "in a couple of weeks", so I began exploring other local stores
looking for a copy. To make a long story short, it turned out that THEY
WERE NOT SHIPPING PRODUCT! They were out of the old Mac version, and the XL
version was not done. I gave up after 6 months of being strung along, and
do not even want to discuss what this did to the project. The point of this
is, I am firmly convinced that it is their POLICY to promise software RSN,
no matter how far it is from completion or what the true problem is. I have
many more details if anyone is interested, as the two episodes each went on
for far too long. Expect Laser C to ship whenever they get around to it,
and not a moment before.

Indeed. I believe this is called vapor-lock.

As I say, this is a smokescreen. Call repeatedly over a couple of days,
and watch their story change. Go with Mark Williams, they know how to
produce, ship, and support products!

does anybody else beside me find the advertisement megamax has been running
in the magazines incredibly irritating? you know what i mean, the quote
from a review which goes something like "Don't even *think* about buying
any other C compiler for the ST!!", extracted from a review in Antic (of
course) something like *two years* ago. sheesh....

one more tidbit - when i was still writing regularly for ST Applications,
i got strung along for a couple of months by the megamax marketing weenies,
being told that a beta release of their new compiler (they hadn't yet
coined the name Laser C) would be in the mail to me the next day. they
were hoping to get included in a semi-comprehensive benchmark i did. of
course it never did come. this was around last august... so don't send
in your checks yet, kiddies. at 5-1/4 percent interest on that upgrade
money you could build a nice IRA.

For Mr. Loves information Megamax has not cashed a single check for any
upgrades to Laser C. We will not cash the checks until we ship a product.

For whatever it is worth, I can vouch for that. While I have not been
terribly happy other aspects of Megamax, they do NOT use your money to
finance their development... Just out of curiousity, would someone from
Megamax care to make an official statement about Laser C and the upgrade
policy? If this has already been done, I missed it. I am a registered
owner, if anyone cares, tho my address is out of date.
