[net.music] Separate categories within net.music

greg@olivej.UUCP (01/24/84)

I'd like to cast a vote against subdividing net.music
into separate categories for rock and classical. My
main concern is for all of the music which would then
seem to fall into the cracks (jazz, show music and
soundtracks, operettas and things like the various
Kurt Weill pieces, and earlier pop recordings -
Sinatra and the like). I personally don't care much
for rock, but I often enjoy the articles written
on the subject and, in any case, find it easy enough
to bypass anything I'm not interested in. I'd rather
do that than miss something that I would be interested
in because of confusion over which category it would
fit into.

As to the combining of net.music and net.records; I
think this makes sense. The only time I'd see a
distinction between the two as being necessary is when
someone would want to discuss strictly the sound quality
of a given recording, in which case they would be
most likely to be posting to net.audio anyway. Combining
the two might encourage more discussion of recordings
in conjunction with live performances.

This brings up another point. I, for one, would be
very interested in reading more articles about
performances people have seen. People post articles
about rock concerts, but relatively little about
other types of music (particularly "classical").
Please share your experiences.

I think Greg made a mistake in saying that the creation of
music.rock and music.classical would cause other types of music to
"fall in the cracks". As with other sub-groups, the main group
would remain, for jazz, show tunes, etc. (Unless I missed something
on news.groups)

(This, of course, is another site voting for the merging and
the subgroups).

I agree -- separate categories for net.music are unwise. I have found
I can easily skip over enties which are not of interest to me by
title so the mixture of musical preferences is not really a problem.
