Oberon Associates makes a device much like this for the IBM PC; it's only $400 and appears to work OK, but it needs to be visually aligned on the line of text. Character recognition software is provided. There is a good reading machine for the blind from Kurtzweil, developed about ten years ago. Original versions ran about $20K, but the price must be down by now. John Nagle
