[comp.sys.atari.st] Calling J. Sonander or C. Allen re FILEFIX.ACC

051332@UOTTAWA.BITNET (John Turnbull) (03/15/88)

Regarding the PD program FILEFIX.ACC recently posted on ATARINET:
I love it -- I want to have its children...

(For those of you that have not seen this GEM, its a replacement
File Selector box that is installed from a desk accessory.
It manages to replace the normal - buggy - File Selector generated
by a fsel_input() call with a much more versatile version, similar to
the demonstration program FSEL.PRG posted some time back. For those
of you with a monochrome system, it is a 'must have'.)

On the subject of children, what attributes would I like?

1) Well, it is such a good program, there ought to be a colour version.

2) It would be nice if it would automatically install the new File
Selector without the user needing to go to the desk option, and
firing it up manually; ala ROCP.ACC. You don't really expect that
people will want to return to the old File Selector box after using
   yours.

3) The default filename extensions are a little C-ish, could they be
changed to something a little more generic like .PRG, .TTP, .TOS, or
for users of communications packages .UUE, .ARC, .PRG. As long as
they are three character filename extensions, the user can jump in
with a disk editor and modify them to their own needs. I used Simon
Poole's DLII.PRG to change the .BSC to .DO(blank), and the new
version managed to find all the FLASH .DO files on my disk. A user
cannot easily change a one character default filename extension to
   a multiple character extension.

Thank you again for this program, and I hope that you may be able to
incorporate some of these changes in any future revision. /JT
