i've got FLASH and just recently got my hands on the source for umodem, which although for 4.2|ver7|sys3 seems to compile without complaints on sysV, so now i can upload/download via xmodem right? wrong. both sides just sit there waiting until one of them times out. is there some secret code that must be entered from the keyboard, some magic word to be intoned? some small animal to be sacrificed? if not, is there a real copy of xmodem for unix that'll work with the xmodem one gets using FLASH ? if not, okay, i'm not fussy, i'll take KERMIT, er, that is if some entity out there could direct me to a version that'll run on the ST... oh BY THE WAY, my mouse died, and after fruitless attempts to revive it i took it into a local atari dealer. that was a month ago. went in there yesterday and the dealer presents it to me with a replacement charge of $45!!!! to understate the case, i was not amused. the chap at the store said he'd seen a lot of dead mice showing up lately, and that he didn't make a cent off of getting them replaced. atari bills him $X, he bills me $X (+ tax). -- Mike Nemeth "etch out a future of your own design, ...utzoo!hcr!miken well tailored to your needs" - T. Could it be the dreaded TAIWAN mouse?!? As far as I can tell from the postings on the net, the Taiwan mouse is made of cheaper components than the Japan mouse. I have a Japan mouse, and the guts are mostly chip- type capacitors and tiny resistors. If you need a new mouse, hunt down one made in Japan. In a related vein, anyone know how to hook up an optical mouse to the ST (or any other machine other than IBMacintosh). The mice are about $75 and are _much_ nicer than mice with balls;-) Should be a pretty simple effort (if you're an EE). Just make sure one end knows it is sending (the umodem flag is "-sb" for "send binary" or "-st" for "send text, nyet?) and the other is set up to receive. If both ends think they're receivers, neither will initiate the transfer and will eventually time out. I use FLASH! version 1. something-or-other with umodem; it works fine. >is there a real copy of xmodem for unix that'll work with the xmodem >one gets using FLASH ? if not, okay, i'm not fussy, i'll take KERMIT, >er, that is if some entity out there could direct me to a version that'll >run on the ST... By the way, Antic also sells a FLASH! accessory that provides Kermit, as well as a sort of mini-bbs. Except it isn't REALLY a BBS, but it is useful for, say, dialing up your Atari while at work... I run stock umodem on System V, and it seems to work. I don't use FLASH though. It could be that one side is using Xmodem-CRC and not the other. If there is a way to tell FLASH to switch on/off Xmodem-CRC mode v.s plain old Xmodem, you might try that. If you can't find kermit anywhere else for the ST, I have a few versions on my BBS at (415) 452-4792 (1200 baud; type 'bbs' at the first login prompt). -- David Beckemeyer | "To understand ranch lingo all yuh Beckemeyer Development Tools | have to do is to know in advance what 478 Santa Clara Ave, Oakland, CA 94610 | the other feller means an' then pay UUCP: ...!ihnp4!hoptoad!bdt!david | no attention to what he says"
