With all the discussion of Apple getting cocky again, it is worth noting that the ST's GEM is GEM version 1. This is the version that was created by DRI before the lawsuit by Apple. GEM version 2 makes a number of changes as a result of the Apple-DRI settlement. The DESK selection of the menu bar appears on the right, growing and shrinking boxes have been disabled in parts of the system, and the GEM desktop no longer allows overlapping windows. Apple is now regretting the fact that its Quickdraw assumes that a pixel is always 1/72 inches high on a screen device. The font used in menus, dialogs, etc. is way too small when viewed on a high-resolution screen. In GEM a new screen device driver and appropriate fonts can always be added to the system. This is a distinct advantage over Quickdraw. For all the abuse it gets, GEM really does have some strong points.
