There's been some discussion in this group lately of the recently released Microsoft Write. The participants in the discussion seem to be using "MS Write" and "MS Word" interchangeably. Is MS Write really a full implementation of Word? If so, why the name difference? I don't know very much about Word, but I had a quick look at the Write manual at my local Atari dealer the other day, and it looked pretty basic. My suspicion is that Microsoft has done it again, and released a poor cousin of Word for the ST. Could someone who's used Word on ms-dos machines have a look at Write, and set my suspicious mind to rest? BBB ---------------------- Bob Bright <BRIGHT@DALAC.BITNET> Philosophy Dept. From what I hear, Atari's "Microsoft Write" is basically a port of Microsoft Word VERSION 1.0 for the Mac. What is currently sold by Microsoft as "Word" for the Mac and the PC is a completely different program.

MS Write is a small subset of what MS Word offers. It has many useful features, such as Footnoting and support of many fonts. I have used MS Word on MS-DOS systems, including the ST under PC-Ditto. I played with a copy of write at a dealer, and almost paid the $89 price (I think list is close to $125). BUT...there is no spell checker and no thesaurus! These are absolute musts in my opinion. The program seemed to be OK, I did not test extensively. MS Word is a full-featured word processor, and does everything you would ever need. It has a HUGE manual, and all of the features I have used work well. I'm not sure of the actual cost, I purchased my copy at a student discount through my school. There is one problem with it - it is so slow under PC-Ditto it is almost useless. If Write is ever realeased with a speller and thesaurus, I will consider it again. Until then, I'm saving my pennies for Word Perfect (I'm no longer a full time student, so I don't qualify for their $99 discount :-( ). -- Ron DeBlock KA2IKT 213 River Dr. ...!rutgers!galaxy!argus Lk Hiawatha, NJ 07034 ron@wilbur.njit.edu (201) 316-6807 "NECKTIES MAKE MEN STUPID" - Weekly World News headline
