[comp.sys.atari.st] Laser printers are old technology!

Friesen@HIS-PHOENIX-MULTICS.ARPA.UUCP (06/05/88)

I just found out that Laser printers have already been outdone. Now
companies are starting to produce liquid crystal printers. They print
at the same resolution (300 DPI), but are more reliable, and less
expensive. They are said to be more reliable because they don't require
the use of precision optics. They are supposed to be cheaper to make
because they don't use expensive optics, they don't have precision
optics to be precisly installed, and they have less parts.(although they
are the same price as a laser printer now, because they just have been
released)

A laser printer uses a laser to draw an image on a photosensative
"plate" or sensor, this sensor then tells the printer what to print.
This setup, however, requires precision optics and lasers.

The liquid crystal system has a liquid crystal shutter over the sensor
plate, and by sending light through the shutter when it has set-up for
what needs to be printed, the sensor plate can pic-up the image and
print it.

{sorry for the sloppy form, and the "non-technical" descriptions, but I
am tired, and I don't have the article handy}

good-night!

   ]-) a sleeping smiley face!
