[comp.sys.atari.st] Getting Back Into The ST World

jca@homxc.UUCP (J.ANTROSIGLIO) (06/03/88)

Hi,

I've had an 1040ST for awhile but really haven't had time to
used it too much. I now have some free time so I pulled it out
of the closet and it booted up just fine.

Anyway, the last time I used it, almost a year ago, there was talk
about Atari releasing an updated OS, blitter chip, 4-Meg upgrade,
and stuff like that. Did any of this stuff ever get released?
I sent in all the registration cards when I purchased my 1040ST
and would assume (am I nuts!) Atari would keep me informed of new
product releases and such. Well, to this day I've haven't received
anything from Atari. The question is did I miss any major updates?
If so, how would I go about getting my machine updated?
I'm in good shape with the software I purchased for the machine
since I kept upgrading the packages when the vendors sent me
their upgrade offers. My only problem is the ST itself.

Also, which are the latest mags for the ST computes. I sent
in a sub. card to STart last year but never received anything.
Now I can't even find a St mag anywhere. Any recommendation?

Thanks In Advance,

John

The Mega (2 and 4 Meg) were released, but no upgrade for 520's or 1040's,
at least not from Atari. The blitter and upgraded OS was released,
but I don't know what the volumes are like. I haven't heard whether you can
get them for just any system. Atari is beta testing another OS upgrade. So
you haven't missed much from Atari. (That's not a flame, just my opinion.)

The magazines that I know of are: STart (8 times a year), Atari Explorer
(6 times), Reset (6 times), ST-Log (monthly). There are also newspaper
types like ST World. Apparently Compute's ST will not be publiched any more
(too bad). Current Notes (by the Washington Area Atari groups) is good.
Personally, I like STart, Explorer, and Reset. I wasn't impressed with the last
issue of ST-Log. Analog and Antic have some ST stuff, but they are mainly
8 bit magazines.

What you really missed is some great software. If you're into games, get
DungeonMaster. If not, look around. Anyway, welcome back to the ST world.
