[comp.sys.atari.st] mega woes

PETCHER@FSU.BITNET (06/17/88)

I am not having very good luck with Mega 2's so far. Last December I purchased
one, which was obviously buggy from day one. Typically after the machine was
on for about an hour it would simply start crashing randomly with no apparent
cause. Partly because I also had some new software and partly because I was
busy with other things at the time, it took me about a month to realize that
the problem was really a hardware problem and two or three more weeks to get to
where I could sufficiently demonstrate it to my dealer in a controlled
environment (i.e. I had to learn how to crash the desktop without any other
programs present, lest they be accused of being the culprits). It appeared
to be a heat problem in the end - some chip just couldn't take the heat.

Finally it was obvious that the machine should go back. So the dealer called
Atari, they agreed, and that was that. After somewhat over two months of
waiting I finally recieved a replacement. Aside from the long wait (I had a
1040ST available at the time so I didn't ask the dealer for a loan) that was
all well and good. One occasionally expects a lemon with any sort of
complicated equipment. The first strike against Atari though is that there are
only two Mega owners in our local Atari users group and *both* of us had the
same experience with the first machine we recieved. Both had hardware
problems. And they were not purchased in the same store, but several hundred
miles apart.

I also purchased a Mega 2 in December. I have had no problems with it.
My SH204 hard disk had a Power Supply failure just after the waranty
expired, and my Supra 2400 Modem died about a week after getting the
Hard Disk fixed (It is still under waranty). But the Mega 2 has consistently
worked with no problems.
