I have been requested by my employer to find an alternative to DEC's service, which my employer feels is overpriced. This is not a flame at DEC. Their service, when required, has been very good. My feelings run along the lines of "you get what you pay for" and "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"; as usual, my opinion was not requested. We currently are running a Vax 11/780 with 2 RP06 drives, a TU77 tape unit, 4 meg and 48 ports. Our service contract with DEC provides 4 hour on site call, remote diagnostics, monthly PM's. Any hardware problems not caused by our negligence is covered by our monthly payment, which runs around $2800. (this came in handy when one of our rp06 drives chewed up a pack 2 months ago) If you have had any experience with non-DEC maintenance or have any information on companies capable of providing the same level of service we now receive, I would greatly appreciate it if you would forward your information to me.
