[comp.sys.atari.st] SMPTEtrack!

Updike@UMass.BITNET (07/17/88)

I'm not crazy about the program. The editing features are not that
great, and I don't like the interface.

I'm using Master Tracks Pro and like it very much except for the
slowness of GEM windows. It's good features include:
1. 192 ppq
2. MIDI file standard support
3. Nice editing
4. System exclusive recording
5. The ability to map the MIDI keyboard so that you can control the
transport controls of the sequencer from the MIDI keyboard.

It's a nice program. It does not come with SMPTE. For my money, however
I would rather have MTP and a Jambox2, which provides extra MIDI outs,
a MIDI merging function and read/write SMPTE in all three formats. In
addition, Jambox2 will work with most Sequencers....so you can bring it
with you into the studio and have it work with your Yamaha QX7 or with
anything that supports MIDI song pointer.....The cost will be about $500
for the whole set up and provides much more flexability (I think). MTP
is copy protected, allowing you to make as many backups as you need, but
you must insert the key disk or main disk at the beginning of each session.
Not great,...but not that bad.

Intelligent Music is coming out with a program called Realtime for the ST
which will be the ST version of Upbeat (from what I have heard) which allows
real time loop recording....something that no sequencer program on the
market allows...for those of us who love drum machince programming. It
will support MIDI file standard and be basically like Page R sequencing
on a Fairlight. They also have a version of M out for the ST, but I
don't like programs which know more about music than I do.

On the question side: Does anyone know if Turbo ST will speed up GEM
windows like it claims? This would help a great deal with the slowness
of the GEM windows in MTP.

Do the new ROMs allow you to boot a GEM program from the auto folder, or
will we have to continue using STARTGEM?

Any information would be helpful on these questions.....
