[comp.sys.atari.st] Uniterm & KERMIT on VM/CMS

BHOLMES@WAYNEST1.BITNET (Brian Holmes) (07/16/88)

Since my last message, I have received several replies, but I still have
not been able to get UNITERM V2.0d 005 to transfer files via KERMIT to
VM/CMS. I have no problems with FLASH, PROCOMM, MS-KERMIT, or MAC-KERMIT.
I set flow control to none, and log on VM/CMS with 7 bits EVEN parity.
FLASH doesn't even have an option for flow control and it works. When
I work with PROCOMM, FLASH, MS-KERMIT, and MAC-KERMIT, a strange character
appears at the beginning of each line, when I have flow control disabled.
When in UNITERM I don't get this extra character. How can I be sure that
flow control is disabled? Has anyone been successful with a UNITERM - VM/CMS
kermit file transfer?

Here at SLAC, we have an IBM 3081. There is an IBM Series/1 that performs
the translation from IBM 3xxx terminal to more standard ASCII terminals.
This means that when I am running KERMIT, I am in full screen mode. I have
little or no problems with downloading files to my ST. I find it almost
impossible to upload a file to the mainframe. The settings that I use are
the defaults that come with Uniterm, I think. My problem seems to be that
the beginning ctrl-A is being lost by somebody along the way. I don't think
the problem is with Uniterm since I have used Kermit to send files to IBM
PC's that are owned by friends. My problems appear to be located in the
interplay of the Micom digital switch that I dial, the Series/1 connected
between the Micom switch adns the mainframe, and the mainframe itself. There
also may be a problem with noisy connections.

By the way, there is a Vax here with Kermit-32. With it, I am able to download
with no problem, and upload with about 50% success. Does anyone out there
have almost 100% success with Kermit-32? If so, I would like to know how
you do it. At least then, I could begin to try to trace down my Kermit
problems.

I can not even upload with a %50 success rate, mine is somewhere around
%10 successful, %90 othere things happen... I would like to know if this
has something to do with the length of my modem cable? It is around 15'.
Because I have no problems uploading to pc's, and atari's, etc. Just when
uploading to the vax here....??

Steve.
