[comp.sys.atari.st] problems with hinstall

leo@philmds.UUCP (Leo de Wit) (07/15/88)

I'm having trouble running the hard disk driver installation program,
hinstall.prg. After selecting Install from the menu-bar and clicking
on Yes (Do you really want to etc...) the program bombs (bus error).
I've retried after disabling all AUTO *.prg's (except for AHDI.PRG)
and all accessories, but the problem remains (so it shouldn't be
my fault 8-). ARC.TTP says that all files in the archive are ok.
They are:

204BOOT.IMG 204ROOT.IMG AHDI.PRG DIRSLEFT.PRG DIRSLEFT.TOS
FOLDR100.PRG HDX.PRG HDX.RSC HINSTALL.PRG HINSTALL.RSC
SHIP.PRG WINCAP

The first problem was that hinstall.prg could not find a:\hinstall.rsc,
so I put all files on a floppy in drive A: and retried it from there.
Then the bus error occured. The disk itself is not accessed (a SH204).
The system I'm using is a 520ST+ with a SF354 and the hard disk (the
roms have at addresses 0xfc001a and further: 1985 0007 0b74). The hard
disk has the standard partitioning: 4-6-10. The dirsleft.prg and
dirsleft.tos programs worked. Most other programs were the same as on
the boot diskette I got with the hard disk (like hdx.prg, hdx.rsc,
ahdi.prg; ship.prg and wincap were different though).

What I'm asking is: has anybody successfully installed the bootable
driver? or has anybody had the same problems I had? or am I doing
something wrong? Give some spec in your answer of the system you're
using; preferably e-mail.

If all the installation program does is writing one of 204boot.img,
204root.img (they are the same anyway) onto the first sector of the
disk I can do it myself with a little program.

Any help appreciated.

    Leo.
