[comp.sys.atari.st] Hard Drive Headaches

elixir@m-net (Rodney Fulk) (08/16/88)

I have the following hardware setup as my bbs.
An old atari 520ST(ONe of the first with TOS in ROM)
I am using a 1meg expansion board (ONe that uses the
shhifter I think? Instead of the two small chips!?!?)
a single sided drive (I swap a double sided drive off my other
system for backups)
An ICD Host adapter, the Adaptek RLL controler (4070a?)
and a segate 277rl drive...
My sw is Forem 2.3 and here's my problem...
After a while my bbs starts to crash.. It can't find files..
But I dont think it is the bbs sw since a friend of mine
had a simular happening with his bbs also..

THe file IS accessable via desktop BUT NOT from the GEMDOG
File opening box, the interlinks file selector, or anything else..

Whats the beef? Is this a problem in Gem or in ICD's stuff?
A temporary fix seems to be to reformat the drive and move all the stuff back..
But when my 65 meg drive gets full that will be a very painful thing to do.

I AM currently running Turbo Dos (A disc cache from Atari France)
but the problem showed its head before to me before I even knew what turbo dos
was.. (THis is the second time this problem has happened to me in 2 months)

WHat causes this and is there an easier way of fixing it?
I also must say that I have shut the computer off a few times due to locked up
programs and when I was using arc...
(Ever type "m destination source" but when typing the source you hit
the return key instead of the \ while selecting the directory?
On a hard drive with a 16 meg partition of which 4 meg is used
I dont fancy the idea of letting 4 meg go arced, then erase the four meg,
and then have to recover by doing the reverse..
Not my idea of a fun half hour)

Which brings me to ask another question.....
Is there an EASY way of arcing a directory into seperate files instead
of doing numerous "M destination source" calls?
I really don't feel to enthused about trying to write a shell to do it but
will if I have to..
