[comp.sys.atari.st] STedi and Tempus

PETCHER@FSU.BITNET (08/30/88)

I recently received a copy of the most recent issue of the Dutch magazine
STart (no relation to the one from Antic) and found something that may amuse
some of you, especially if you are familiar with the editors Tempus and
STedi.

The magazine contains an article entitled 'Tempus, the fastest scroller' which
is a review of the editor Tempus and somewhat of a comparison to other editors
on the market. Tempus is an editor that some of you may know is renowned for
its speed. In this case the title tells it all. Tempus is the fastest
scroller. In the article they state that Tempus is one and one half times
faster than STedi, and a chart tells us that Tempus is twice as fast as
Textomat and more than six times as fast as First Word (these being the only
programs tested). The only other function that is tested is search and
replace, and the article goes something like this (my free translation):

"The greatest speed difference is seen in the search and replace command.
Here Tempus is some 90 times faster than Textomat. Oh by the way, STedi
is somewhat faster, about 900 times faster than Textomat (10 times faster
than Tempus)"

Nothing like indirect comparison. I guess that blows it for the claim of
Tempus to be the speed king. Although it is the fastest in scrolling ...
I think in most functions which have little to do with screen display, Tempus
would come up on the short end.

The article does point out quite fairly that STedi has many more capabilities
than Tempus, but it is not GEM based (for those of you so bent), and Tempus is
available as a stand alone product in contrast to STedi which is marketed as a
part of the Craft development package (see other postings recently). Thus if
you are not a serious developper, or don't want a shell environment, or just
loooove GEM ;-) Tempus may be of interest. Otherwise STedi is the way to go.
