Hi there! I got my ATARI 1040 ST in spring 1987 and still everything is fine with it. Now, Several days ago, my sister bought also an ATARI 1040 ST, but unfortunatly it differs from mine. Many programms that run perfectly on my old ST are not executeable on the new ST of my sister. Or, if they are executeable on the new ST of my sister, their behavior is not exactly the same as on my old ST. First, I thought, the new ST of my sister would be defect. But then I detected that the new ST has a TOS-Version (19.0 from April 87) that differs from the one of my old ST (19.0 from Feb. 86). I guess the newer TOS Version must be the so called blitter-TOS. I heard that some programms for the 1040 ST do not run on the Mega ST, because of its new TOS. But I wonder why ATARI inserts the new TOS Version in the 1040 ST. There is no blitter for the 1040 ST! Ok, I know that the new TOS is a debugged Version of the older Version. And some Funktions now work more pleasant. For example, if you copy a file from "Disk A" to "Disk B" by using only one Drive, you only have to exchange the disks ONCE. That's nice. But how is it possible to introduce a new TOS Version which is not compatible to the old one! Old software can't be used with the new TOS. But people buy a computer because they expect that can use known programms! For my opinion, a dealer how sells ATARI ST computer with the new TOS has to give a warning to the customer, that this computer has only a reduced useablity! Now, my sister is disappointed because she got such a ST with reduced useability. I guess, other people have the same problems with the new TOS Version. I'm interested in any comments. Which programms are not executable with the new TOS Version? And why not? Is it possible to get newer Versions of these Programms which are executable with the new TOS? And what can I do to make it possible to run all Programm, that run on the old ST, to run on the new ST? Thanks for every hint! Ingolf Markhof.

Ingolf, why don't you just list the programs that your sister is having trouble with, and the exact problems ? It would be much simpler then to locate the possible bugs.
