[comp.sys.atari.st] Copiers

JJL101@PSUVM.BITNET (J.J. Lehett) (10/21/88)

Let me start this by saying that this post is NOT about pirating software!!!!
So do not flame this for that reason, I had enough problems with that before
and do not wish to see it happen again.
I always try to make backup copies of all my software, for my own personal
reasons, Up until now, Procopy 1.50 has done me well, but since I have
BOUGHT! Dungeon Master and Captain Blood, I have not been able to copy these
programs, and Dungeon Master has already messed up on me once due to disk
problems. What I would like to know is if anyone out there knows of any
copiers that will copy these programs.

Once again, this is not for piracy's sake - it is for personal backups!

       Thanks in advance,
                        J.J.

I'm behind you 100% on this. I have both an IBM-AT and an atari. In IBM-land
there has definately been a strong trend away from copy-protection even in
games. The protection now being used more is of the form of keying in a
keyword from the manual to allow use of the software.

I've also had problems with my Dungeon Master disk and am real pissed off.
After running it for several months, it simply would not boot successfully.
All other software I own works OK, so its apparently the copy-protection
scheme on it. It boots on other machines too. I've managed to obtain a
cracked version of the pre-1.0 DM, but this has only been as a last resort
and unacceptable one at that.

A local dealer has told me that a program called "acopy" will copy DM. It
has to be the very latest version of acopy (I don't know the version #). The
older acopy version will copy DM, but not exactly. DM will start and you'll
be able to play for about 15 minutes before DM realizes you're running a
copy. Supposedly the latest acopy won't do this.

It's a shame a great game has to be ruined by byzantine copy protection
schemes. Hopefully more software companies will wake up to the fact that
they're really harming thier paying customer's.

FTL wouldn't have been able to sell Dungeon Master far & wide if they had
little or no copy protection. Many software DISTRIBUTORS, the people who
REALLY get software to market, were adamant about copy protection on games.
This is why some larger software houses (Electronic Arts, for example)
ARE distributors for (at least) their own products. FTL simply isn't the
size of EA or Broderbund, so they have to do some 'dirty' work to get their
products sold.

Additionally, there's the SPA - Software Publishers Association (pro-
copy protection, including harder legislation and litigation) that also
foments the continued use and implementation of copy protection. FTL
doesn't like to do the copy protection, but they have no real say about
it - if you want to make a case against copy protection like DM has, as
well as other related beefs, contact the SPA and let them know your view-
points. Sorry, *I* don't know their address.

Of particular note: software exported from America to Europe and points
abroad MUST be copy protected, or the overseas people don't want to take
a chance on it. As I recall, even EA software for export had to still be
copy protected, even though domestically, it isn't. That MAY have changed,
now that EA can do this business themselves and have such a popular line that
they can actually throw their weight around.
