To the people at him1.cc.umich.edu, How can the distant net user access the ST archives? I have tried to tip him1..., but can't. This is the PC7/Guest system. Y.I.T.B.O.S. Ernest C. Spieu! glk2462@uiucuxf

I hope you meant ftp, not tip. tip is for serial lines... The Computing Center has been having a little trouble with the HIM, which provides Internet access for our 3090. Several people have reported difficulty establishing a connection. Hopefully the problems will be resolved soon. In the meantime, the Bitnet access is still somewhat confused. Earlier this year, our site moved to the newer EBCDIC standard (IBM CP37, I think? Also an ISO standard character set...) Some sites that I've been (manually) sending uuencoded files to have been unable to decode due to this inconsistency. (they use the old EBCDIC tables. About 6-10 characters have changed position, in an effort to allow 1-1 mapping to 8bit ASCII...) Still working on a solution to this. (Suggestions are welcome.) UUCP access will be by mail request, since we don't support UUCP directly on the mainframe. (Traffic will go to umix, which is an Internet/UUCP gateway.) -- / /_ , ,_.
