[comp.sys.atari.st] Question about the new Atari harddisks

VBRANDT@DBNUAMA1.BITNET (11/23/88)

A few weeks back, Atari has introduced several new products on the German
market. I like the way they've done it much more than what they used to do
earlier, in fact, it was a bit too noiseless for me. :-)

The most important new products are the Megafile 40 and the Megafile 60, both
are hard disks based on the SH205 (now dubbed 'Megafile 20') with 40 resp. 60
MB capacity.

While the new 2080ST (= 1040ST w/2MB RAM) is yet but a rumour, the Megafile 40
and 60 do exist, prices are available, and my dealer says I could order one any
time I liked. :-)

Now my question is: what drives are inside these new Megafiles? Do they still
have the same SCSI adaptor/controller that's in the SH205? Or is it an RLL
type? How fast are the drives (28 ms??)?

The one I'm mostly interested in is the Megafile 60, which I might buy, depen-
ding on how much it'll cost me (DM 1995 list price is a little to high) and
how much I get for my old SH204 (anyone interested?).

PS: Please reply to me directly, Info-Atari16 digests currently don't
    make it to BITNET.

Dont throw away your sh204.

Inside it is just like the bms-100 in function.

there is a SCSI adaptor (little board) connected to an Adaptec 4000.

The adaptec is connected to 1 internal drive.

An adaptec will run 2 drives. just add a second drive:
1. get new 34 pin ribbon with 3 connectors on it (not just 2.)
   a. one connector to adaptec, one to internal drive, one continues out
      the box to another drive.
2. get a second 20 pin connector, just like the internal one, only longer.

((these are standard PC materials -- should be easy to get or make ))

3. add a second drive and a power supply for it. sh204 doesnt have any to
   spare.

I put a 80 meg drive on my sh204 -- works great.

  [rest deleted]

The new hard drives are the MEGAFILE *30* and MEGAFILE 60.

The '30' uses an ST-238R with an RLL controller and the '60' uses an RLL
rated 3650 with an RLL controller. Step rates aren't in the sub-40
millisecond range, but neither can my car go from 0-100 km/h in under 6
seconds...
