[comp.sys.atari.st] Problem with 1040ST disk drive

A friend of mine has recently bought two 1040ST's from a supplier in
London, England. He has been having some problems formatting disks
on both of the machines. He has access to other ST's and formatted
disks from these can be reformatted on his 1040 without any problem,
it just won't format new ones.

I must confess that I never read this news group and I know nothing
about ST's, so I apologise if this is old hat or trivial, but he
needs some help. He assures me he knows what he's doing, having had
a smaller ST for a couple of years now.

Any help anyone can give would be much appreciated.
