A proffessor here at Laurentian University is considering converting his multi-tasking operating system "LUMOS" to a mass market machine, namely the Atari ST or an Amiga system. The OS was initially written on a Stride system, but the company has (it appears) gone out of buisness and thus a more widely avalible machine is important. Rumor has it that Stride is now again producing machines, has anyone else heard this rumor? Although the processor is not that important, the inclusion of a MMU is a requirement. Thus, he has eliminated the Mac and the low-end Amiga machines, and is now looking for information regarding the purchase of either the Atari 1040ST, or the Amiga 2500. Since price is a consideration, the 2-3 times price difference between the two machines is certainly important. Graphics and sound are not an issue, and a mono screen is practically a requirement, so it seems that the ST ideally is suited to his needs. Also, the recent conversion of the Minix OS to the ST has him interested as well. He had several questions about the system that I was not able to answer, so if anyone KNOWS the answer to one or more of the following, would you be kind enough to e-mail me any replies directly? a) Exactly what do the official Atari technical notes include? Along with the software docs, does it include detailed, solid documentation of the MMU, ports, schematics etc? b) Is there a book on the ST version of Minix specifically? IE, preferably, he would like a book called "ST Minix" or something to that effect, a book that would include notes on what exactly was required during the conversion. c) How "good" is the MMU in the ST. Previous letters in the net implied that the chip is a little flakey, one went so far as to say "Proccessor by Motorola, memory by NEC, MMU by Fancy Feast!" (close enough). Is the MMU suited to writing a MT OS with a minimum of heartache? d) Where can one find the source to MX2, any version would be fine. Note that we can't do FTP from this site. Thanks in advance, Maury Markowitz, MAURY@LauCosc.Laurentian.CA disclaimer: I work for/represent no company, organization or institution named in this letter.
