[comp.sys.atari.st] Help needed diagnosing 520ST problem

Help! I have a 520ST with an RF jack in back. I have a monochrome monitor,
but use a color tv hooked to the RF jack as a color monitor. Here's my
problem. When I have the monochrome monitor hooked up, the computer works
like a dream, but when I try to use color, I have some problems. If I
put in a disk that would normally go to the desk top, and then turn on
the computer (in the color mode) the desk top comes up. If I move the
mouse up to the menu bar, activating a menu, the machine makes like it is
resetting. I get no bombs, and the machine finally just quits with a totally
blank screen. Pressing reset does no good. If I move the mouse to the menu
bar, without activating a menu, nothing happens. If I double click on a drive
icon, the problem mentioned above happens. If I single click on a drive icon,
the icon in highlighted, and no problem occurs. If I just look at the compter
without moving the mouse, eventually, the above problem occurs, although at
no discernable frequency. Now, if I put a game that autoboots into the machine
and turn it on, everything works fine (even in color mode). So, can anyone
put forth a theory as to what might be ailing my machine. It works fine
in mono mode, or in color mode, if the disk bypasses the desk top with an
auto boot. It does not work in color mode, when the desk top is accessed,
although no bombs are generated. I've ruled out problems with RAM, since
things work fine in mono mode, and color mode with an autoboot. Could I
have a ROM problem? Would a ROM problem not generate any bombs? Is there
anyway I can test the ROM (from mono mode)? If you suggest loose chips
as a possible source for the problem, could you advance a theory as to
how the loose chips might be causing the problem? Help! Any "guesses"
would be greatly appreciated.
