[net.wanted] Wanted portable VCR camera info.

margaret@asgb.UUCP (Margaret Ann Farnik) (10/08/85)

I am in need of information on portable VCR camera set-ups. I am going to
New Zealand in November, and would like to buy one for the trip. Has anyone
had any experience with the many brands now available on the market? I am
looking for something fairly small, and not too expensive (<~$900 for the
combination of camera & VCR). Has anyone tried mixing brands- say, a Sony
camera & Panasonic VCR? I am looking for a VHS format machine. Also, has
anyone done any extensive traveling with one? Is it worth the pictures, or is
it more trouble/worry than it's worth? Please respond soon, as I would like
to learn how to run it before I leave.

Thanks in advance,

I have used quite a lot of portable gear from Sony, Panasonic, etc.
I don't think I would lug a recorder and camera on a trip. Sony
has a new unit just hitting the stores now which is a "camcorder"
that records in super beta. From everything I have seen, there
is nothing even close in the consumer grade equipment that can
match the quality of the super beta format. In addition, the
Sony decks have the best features available in consumer gear
for editing and Hi-Fi.

Welllll, if your limit is $900, you'll either have to buy used equipment,
win a contest, or buy junk. The cheapest portable vcr on sale is probably
between $500-$600 and a no frills decent camera is about the same. A
VHS Camcorder is about $1300. You can mix brands if the outlet and plug
match or if you can find/make an adapter. Some cameras can remotely
control the recorder if the recorder has a remote feature. My father
has a Magnavox portable with a Panasonic top of the line camera. The
camera can remotely control the player/recorder. I have an RCA portable
and I have to push buttons on the player/recorder to control the play
function of the camera but I can still control the record via the camera.
If you choose to buy a VCR for your trip, buy extra batteries and buy a
charger that will work with the European AC. As far as usage, it's easy
and you need to practice a little.
